In addition to being able to move the camera on and around your model and to virtually walk around the 3D space, you can select from a range of pre-defined views to quickly put the camera in the right place for a front, side or rear view, an overhead view or an angled view. It’s a good way of learning without having to stop what you’re doing to search a help file or support site. The Instructor may be simple but it’s very useful: it’s context sensitive so for example if you have selected the Orbit tool to move around your model, the Instructor shows a little animation showing you how it works and some text telling you which keys to press to modify what it does. The online library also includes full models of various building types that you can import into SketchUp and make your own, including really ambitious projects such as mansions and skyscrapers, but you’ll find that many of the more exciting structures are just external shells rather than full architectural plans.

SketchUp has its own site of 3D models (opens in new tab) from which you can download models for everything from fences to fridges. Unlike dedicated home design software, SketchUp doesn’t launch with a library of commonly used building materials, fixtures and fittings to get you started so you’ll need to draw your structure yourself or cannibalise somebody else’s model. The left hand toolbar contains the navigation tools and the drawing tools, which you’ll use a lot. Where other apps fill half your screen with toolbars and sidebars, it takes a more Zen approach: there’s a toolbar down the left of the screen and another one down the right. SketchUp Free’s interface is deliberately extremely simple. They can choose to either observe the project from above and also exterior or take a closer glance from within, inspecting the design from the perspective of someone that is entering the building for the first time. With HoloLens and the new application called SketchUp, architects are able to recreate a tri-dimensional layout of their work in progress.
There have been recorded incidents throughout architectural history where the difference between design and creation were astronomical, leading to equally funny and sad moments of human error, such as bridges that don’t meet in the middle. Advanced architectural work ethics and skill will ensure that the final result will be as close as possible to the original design, but often times, it’s not exactly the case.
